ARTIST HACKERSPACE

GARDEN OF CANVAS

COURSE: ARCH 100C

PROFESSOR: NASTARAN MOUSAVI

Located in the historical Mission District, Parcel 36 features a distinctly linear form that hints at its origins as a part of the San Jose San Francisco Railway. Consequently, the natural ceremony of procession through this space is a repetition of linear elements. This proposal seeks to refute the naturally linear path of circulation by enticing occupants to follow a deceivingly choreographed path.

SITE CONTEXT

In an effort to return a sense of autonomy and identity to the historical artist community in the Mission District, the architecture features massive, tectonic plates that double as facades of the structures. These “plates” are reclaimed as literal canvases for the resident artists, offering a pedestal to create and display local art, intertwining the cultural fabric of the surrounding context with the skin of the building.

RECLAIMING ARTIST HABITAT

Inspired by the design philosophies of Zen gardens of Edo Japan, the architecture of this mixed-use artist residence seeks to refute the linear monotony of its site through various meandering elements that compel occupants to follow a choreographed path of circulation. As a result, the ceremony of procession through this space is highlighted by a series of deliberately framed perspectives, placing a special emphasis on each mural diplayed on the canvas walls.
