CONCEPT

This design calls for a large scale mixed-use building, featuring a large subdivision of housing along with public programs including: a theater, grocery market, and restaurant. The design philosophy begins with an examination into the spatial conditions presented by Gego’s work in the 2D plane. A further investigation reveals a rhythm created by the spacing in between the hatching, creating an interwoven effect. This character is then projected into the third dimension, adopting a more literal weave. This weaving allows for the creation of private light wells for residents, while rendering a rhythmic facade in elevation. Consequently, the skin of the building is perforated, blurring the division between interior and exterior walls. The undulating character of the design’s facade serves as a response to an inquiry into the ways that orthographic projection and a deeper consideration of the “fifth elevation” may play a generative role in the design process.

RENDERING IMAGES IN 3-D

Translations of Goldschmidt’s 2-dimensional art form introduce compelling spatial conditions when the resulting form is sectioned. The interwoven rhythm and its interplay with lighting as conditions evolve between each member informs the guiding philosophy of the architecture.

TRANSLATING DIMENSION

An investigation into the 2D art of Gego reveals a design language defined by hatching and variations in shading. This 2D format can then be understood as the result of a projection of a 3-dimensional object.
