CONCEPT
Responding to the 2022 Museum of Outdoor Arts Design Build Competition prompt, Kubo features a pavilion design inspired by the inherently innovative nature of Filipino vernacular architecture and its most ubiquitous symbol, the bahay kubo or “hut” in Tagalog. Kubo responds to the unique landscape of the Batad Rice Terraces in the Cordillera mountain range of the Philippines. Set above rice paddies, Kubo utilizes a layered roof system that promotes passive cooling by using an exterior layer that captures the brunt of solar heat gain while an inner layer funnels wind into the structure and shades users from heat.
