CONCEPT

The SoMa Urban Institute aims to facilitate mix-used programs, most notably featuring a public assembly hall and a daily workplace for a multidisciplinary team of architects and artists. The proposed archetype aims to foster interaction and collaboration within its resident community, thus including an exhibition space, theater, and cafe within its programming.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Vertical circulation cores establish a visual datum, providing a point of reference for the proportionality of the exterior facade. This datum dissects the horizontality of the facade by a proportion of 2:1.

PROPORTION OF TECTONICS

The facade and management of interior spatial conditions in this design takes its cues from precedents rooted in Romanian Modernism. By aligning with an orthographic grid system, the interior divisions produce immediately legible paths of circulation while allowing larger expanses of unimpeded space for more demanding programs.
